While watching from inside the garden,
you may occasionally be surrounded
by the mist. Please wait without moving.
It will disperse in between 1 and 3 minutes,
so please be cautious of your surroundings as you wait.
In the early morning and late night, the ground around the sea of clouds may be slippery.
Please proceed slowly, and hold hands with children so that they don’t run.

The Tokyo Sea of Clouds and Seven Seasons
receives award

In 2022, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo received
an award from one of Japan’s
most prominent design awards,
the Kukan Design Award, and the Prix Villegiature Awards Grand Prix for international hotels.

The Tokyo Sea of Clouds covers up to ¾
of the vast garden.
Whether the view from a Garden View room,
around Yusuichi pond, the terrace,
or the red bridge, each viewing point
offers a different vision.

The expanse of the mist that spreads through the garden is among the largest in Japan. It gives a unique atmosphere to the historic sites found within the garden.

Guests can actually touch the mist as it spreads around them, like the common childhood fantasy of riding on a cloud. Guests experience the sensation of actually touching the mist.

Staying guests at the hotel can witness an exclusive sight, the Great Sea of Clouds, as it drifts around Ryotei Kinsui, or makes the Three-storied Pagoda appear like an island in the ocean.
Walking within the garden is truly like strolling among the clouds, so please watch your step.

Although a manmade phenomenon,
the Tokyo Sea of Clouds presents
a different vision each day
in response to things like weather,
humidity, and wind.
With white, thick clouds on windless days, drifting mist among the wind,
or shafts of light and rainbows on sunny days, each day is unique!

With each season, and in response to sunlight, rain, wind, and humidity, the sea of clouds is affected by nature on each day. Each visit will greet you with a unique sight.

  • ・The Tokyo Sea of Clouds is complemented by camellias and cherry blossoms in February and March, fireflies in May and June, and red foliage in December.
  • ・On rainy days, the mist spreads wider through the air for a different effect.
  • ・During the summer, the mist keeps the garden cool.
  • ・At night, the sea of clouds is illuminated by One Thousand Lights.

ホテル椿山荘東京の 七季 SEVEN SEASONS

Camellias, Sakura, fresh green, fireflies,
cool summer, autumn, and winter.
Each season welcomes the guest
with a new vision of the garden.

We look forward to being a place of soothing natural beauty
to our guests, who we hope will feel a sense of relaxation
as they experience the unique beauty
brought with each season.

Season 1 Camellias

The garden of Chinzanso was known as the “camellia hill” during the Nanbokucho Period for its naturally blooming camellias, and is now home to some 2300 camellias of 100 types, as well as camellia-themed installation art.

Season 2 Sakura

From the time the Kawazu-zakura bloom in early February to when the Shidare-zakura show their colors in mid-April, cherry blossoms bloom on around 100 trees of 20 different types.
The light pink seasonal Tokyo Sea of Clouds and the spring colors of the garden delight at any time of the day.
Somei Yoshino blossoms also line 2 km of the nearby Kanda River.

Season 3 Fresh Green

In the season when fresh green leaves appear, the garden is filled with a sense of new life.
Hydrangea, iris, and rhododendron bloom, and at night the camellia forest behind the Three-storied Pagoda is lit alluringly with bamboo lanterns.

Season 4 Fireflies

As a tradition of early summer, the garden has been a firefly-watching site for 70 years.
With garden areas for firefly sightings, the Tokyo Sea of Clouds, and bamboo lanterns, it’s the perfect season for a garden stroll.

Season 5 Cool Summer

During the summer, the temperature difference between the nearby city streets and the shade of the hotel garden ranges from 10 to 15℃, making the garden an inviting retreat. The Cool Sea of Clouds, which uses 20% more mist than usual, and the sound of windchimes add to the refreshing atmosphere.

Season 6 Autumn

Tokyo’s autumn leaves distinctly change color late in the season, around late November, but the gradually reddening foliage can be enjoyed through the autumn.
The natural aroma-infused Aromatic Tokyo Sea of Clouds adds a new experience to the season.

Season 7 Winter

From mid-November, the Northern Lights are recreated under the Tokyo night skies.
With new ways to enjoy the holiday season, Christmas illuminations make for a merry end to the year.
