The history and breeding of fireflies
1952
In the garden carried on from statesman Yamagata Aritomo with the ideal of cherishing nature, and the concept of Fujita Kanko founder Eiichi Ogawa to create an oasis in post-war Tokyo, the foundation of our hotel, Garden Restaurant Chinzanso, was born.
1954
Two years after Chinzanso opened, firefly-viewing evenings were commenced, allowing guests to view some 10,500 fireflies among the vast garden. With this event, the hotel founder’s wishes to allow children in Tokyo the chance to see fireflies and to let young people who have moved to Tokyo be reminded of the rich nature of their hometowns was carried on.
1969
In order to let as many people as possible view the fireflies, a firefly breeding center was established. Although the center itself no longer exists, firefly breeding is carried on to this day.
2000
Based on advice from firefly specialists, improvements were made to the breeding center, and to the speed of the waterfall to better match the preferred environment of the fireflies. Further improvements are continued based on such advice.
Present day
The natural environment of the garden is maintained and improved to preserve a location where fireflies can live comfortably, and people can observe their beautiful flight. A biotope has been constructed for people and fireflies to coexist within.
